A Short History on the Woodville Senators Academy
In 2001 the Woodville Baseball club board decided to prioritise junior development in an attempt to rebuild the clubs fortunes from the grass roots, its juniors. With guidance from Don Klaebe, Lawrie Moore, Grant Behrendt & others, our senior coach’s at the time, Andrew Bennett & Paul Chandler, provided the coaching expertise to conduct the first Junior Senators program. Over the years other familiar club people have committed to coach in the program including Shane Nicholson, Adam Lodge, Wayne Dienhoff, and Phil Hirschausen just to name a few. From this time till the current, the Junior Senators has provided a launch pad to the season and allowed our junior players an opportunity to build on their skills and enhance their development in the game. A large number of our current A grade squad players participated in this program and learnt their trade under a group of committed coaches that wished to see Woodville become a power house again in the future. Some of these players are now providng the coaching to the next crop of aspiring baseball players. This year marks the 15th year of the Woodville Junior Senators program, and like all things, they need a refresh. As a proud and successful club we need to continue to promote our juniors as this is where our strength lie. We are a family club that wants to promote the best facilities, coaching & atmosphere so that we can continue to attract junior players that want to play for the Senators. Woodville have always been a progressive club, that’s why we propose that the program be re-named the “Woodville Senators Academy” and that we return to the roots of the program by the Board committing to support, promote and fund the Junior program.
