    Troy Nicholsons' Japan Trip

    Thursday, 8 October 2009

Baseball is a sport full of exciting opportunities for young players these days.

A good example is a trip that Troy Nicholson (under 14s this year) undertook in July / August this year when he was chosen to play for Australia in the World Children’s Baseball Fair in Tokyo.

Troy said “Overall I would have to say that being chosen to travel with the team to represent Australia in the World Children’s Baseball Fair has been a highlight in my life.  I love playing baseball, so I really loved the training and playing side of the trip but I loved the team and cultural things we also did.”

“As the trip got closer I got more and more excited.  Dad went to Sydney with me but I went to Japan on my own.”

The team and coaches met at the Sydney Olympic Stadium for two days training on the main diamond.  Troy’s trip highlights were:

    Baseball highlights

    ·        Played Canada twice, beating them both times with good team efforts.

    ·        Played two Japanese sides.  We were beaten both games by these well drilled teams.  They showed great respect for the game by bowing to the umpire and players.

    ·        I played in many positions during the 4 games.  I enjoyed pitching the most and had no runs scored against me in 3 innings in a game against Canada.

    ·        It was a different experience to play on their all dirt infields and with the bouncy Kenko balls.  We also had a look at a synthetic field.

    Cultural events

    ·        The best event was going to the Tokyo Dome to see the Giants play the Dragons.  I barracked for the Giants who won and my favourite player Ramirez hit two home runs.  The stadium was packed with cheering fans.

    ·        I also enjoyed going to the Japan airlines hanger and the Aquarium.

“I believe that I was really lucky to be chosen to play in this team.  Now I can say that I have played for Australia.  I would like to thank the ABF and the SABL, the coaches, EO and my team mates for making the trip something that I will never, ever forget.  I would recommend it to kids for future years.”
